Chapter XVI
THE DISCOMFITURE OF SIR JOHN
Sir John looked from one to the other of the two sisters. A single false
step might have precipitated him into the street; or, if he had trodden upon an
unsound part of the roof, he must have fallen through it. Curiosity held her by one hand, urging her to
recklessness, and caution held her by the other. Anyhow, he did not sentimentalize her. He
embraced her small body in his arms, kissing her forehead
over and over. Earles scratched his chin for a moment thoughtfully. ’
‘Wouldn’t you?’
‘In Valade’s place, with so much at stake—and more perhaps than he thought,
for if he goes to the lawyers he’s bound to find out about this house—’
Hilary said it for him. Why ever did you let me get into that wagonette?”
“I thought we had to,” said Ann Veronica, who had also been a little under the
compulsion of the marshals of the occasion. “She finds lying up so much very
irksome. "Married!—no—no," replied the woollen-draper. ’
Gerald was relieved to hear the loud guffaw issuing from the old man’s lips. He seemed to be labouring under some great excitement. In that sense, my strategy
worked. Capes and her father stood up, and her father made a belated movement toward
the curtain. .
