Dota 2 International Prize Pool Is Over $34 Million

The International 10 might not happen this year, but that hasn’t stopped it from setting an esports record with over $34 million in the prize pool.

It’s August, so that means it’s time for Dota 2’s The International to break another record for its prize pool. Last year, The International 9 managed to raise $34,330,068 for its prize pool, shattering all previous records which were coincidentally all set by previous editions of The International. This year, The International has done it again with $34,380,092 and counting.

The International is unique for how it crowdfunds its massive prize pools via an annual Battle Pass. It works a little differently than battle passes in games like Destiny and Call of Duty in that each tier of the pass provides rewards but certain tiers also allow players to make additional cosmetic purchases, with 25% of each purchase going to The International’s prize pool.

And since The International has one again broken last year’s record, everyone who owns the Dota 2 Battle Pass will get an extra 10 levels for free.

It’s become a matter of pride for the Dota 2 community to host the biggest esports tournament in the world (at least, in terms of prizing). There was some concern that this year might see a lapse in involvement thanks to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Valve’s most recent announcement regarding The International 10 makes it clear that they still don’t have a date for the tournament and it seems increasingly likely that we won’t get one until at least 2021.

But Dota 2’s players once again rose to the challenge and ensured that The International 10, whenever it does happen, will have the largest prize pool in esports history. And since the prize pool isn’t set until the tournament actually happens, the upcoming International is likely to be far larger than expected.

We could easily see a $40 million prize pool if The International 10 is delayed to 2021, and maybe even closer to $50 million. For an updated tally on the prize pool and a full list of what the Dota 2 Battle Pass provides, check out the official site here.
