Riot Games will continue its tradition of leaning on third parties for early development of its esports, announcing ESL Gaming as the official tournament operator for League of Legends: Wild Rift in Malaysia and Thailand for 2021. As the appointed partner of Riot Games Southeast Asia, ESL will run an official tournament circuit beginning in April 2021 to qualify local champions for a Southeast Asia regional tournament later in the year.
ESL will also operate the official collegiate tournament for the game in Thailand. Additionally, ESL will run open tournaments through its competition platform ESL Play throughout the year.
Wild Rift will be Riot’s first mobile-focused esport, and will be competing in regions like Malaysia with well established MOBA title Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, which has already established regional leagues as well as an upcoming $300K USD world championship taking place in Singapore in January.
