Report: Microsoft in Talks to Acquire Discord for Over $10B

Microsoft is currently in talks to acquire voice and community chat platform for gamers, Discord, according to a report by Bloomberg. Sources told the outlet that the value of the deal could exceed $10B USD.

The platform has surpassed 100M monthly users, growing alongside other voice chat and communication services during the COVID-19 pandemic. In recent years Discord has become the go-to service for voice chat and creating gaming communities. Discussion forums have largely been abandoned by the gaming space in favor of large-scale Discord servers. Many popular influencers and streamers have private Discord servers fans can access through a Twitch or Patreon subscription.

According to Bloomberg, a source indicated that, while Discord is engaged in sales talks with potential buyers, the company is “more likely to go public than sell itself.”

Last year, Microsoft was also in the discussion to acquire video social media app TikTok, and succeeded in purchasing esports tournament organization platform Smashgg.
