Tencent Holdings has added another group of game developers and publishers through a $1.5B USD acquisition of Leyou Technologies. Leyou shareholders signed off on the deal on Dec. 11, and the deal was officially finalized on Wednesday.
Leyou’s holdings include U.K.-based Splash Damage, which has worked on a number of multiplayer first-person shooter games for Activision Blizzard and others over the years; Canadian studio Digital Extremes, developer of the popular online action game Warframe, a minority stake in Certain Affinity, who have worked on the Call of Duty and Halo franchises, and Athlon Games, who is working with Amazon on a Lord of the Rings MMO.
Leyou’s studios join Tencent’s growing list of video game holdings including League of Legends and Valorant developer Riot Games, Brawl Stars and Clash Royale developer Supercell, and MMO developer Funcom. The company also holds a significant minority stake in Fortnite maker Epic Games, and minority stakes in Activision Blizzard, Ubisoft, Krafton, and many other video game companies.
