In March, Apple announced plans to launch a major update to Apple TV, which would encompass both traditional, live TV packages as well as a massive slate of original series programming, living on a subscription service called Apple TV Plus.
The series won’t premiere until this fall (while Apple TV Plus’ specific launch date remains unknown), but at the annual WWDC 2019, Apple revealed a glimpse at one of the first blockbuster-sized series: For All Mankind.
The series, which stars Joel Kinnaman (House of Cards), Michael Dorman (Patriot), Shantel VanSanten (One Tree Hill) and Wrenn Schmidt (Boardwalk Empire), imagines the fallout of the USSR beating the United States in the race to land on the moon.
The short answer? More Apollo missions, more rocket launches, more ambition to go beyond the moon (To Mars! To Saturn!) and a fleet of female astronauts who, perhaps, didn’t get the chance to fly to the sky in our current reality.
Along with the trailer, Tim Cook also announced Apple’s plans for an updated tvOS, including a redesigned home screen and multi-user support with personalized recommendations for anyone using the Apple TV box.
The Apple TV is not the only device that will house Apple TV Plus. Before For All Mankind premieres, Samsung, Sony, and a handful of other tech companies will roll out support for the platform. Based on the trailer, you may want to catch up with this one on a giant television.
