With a title like Evil Dead: The Game, it is clear what the developers at Saber Interactive had set out to achieve in their latest asymmetrical multiplayer game. Their goal was to craft the definitive video game adaptation of the beloved Sam Raimi horror series.
Granted, this was the very same title of another game by Trigger Apps LLC launched on iOS back in 2011, which didn't exactly turn out to be all that great. Whether or not this one fairs any different is up to the individual player's tastes and how well they resonate with those movies and their specific blend of horror and comedy. But if you happen to like this new version of Evil Dead, then here are a few similar games also worth checking out.
7 Back 4 Blood
Billed as the spiritual successor to the Left 4 Dead series, Back 4 Blood was launched in 2021 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. It was developed by Turtle Rock Studios, which is comprised of some of the former developers from Valve that worked on Left 4 Dead.
Their new game incorporates a lot of the same elements as that older one, as well as introducing some improvements that serve as a natural evolution of its formula. For example, it includes an AI-controller Game Director that sets the parameters for each match in response to the players' level of skill and tactics, ensuring that each round feels unique.
6 Evolve
After Turtle Rock Studios had split from Valve in 2010, they'd taken everything they'd learned while working on Left 4 Dead and put it into their first solo video game project. Launched in 2015 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, Evolve was another asymmetrical multiplayer game where four players are tasked with hunting down a fifth playing as a monster.
The gameplay for the monster is presented from a third-person perspective, while the hunters play in first person. The monster is also given a 30-second lead at the start of the match and its main goal is to survive long enough to evolve into a more powerful form.
5 Predator: Hunting Grounds
Launched in 2020 for PS4 and PC, Predator: Hunting Grounds is another 4v1 asymmetrical shooter that should appeal to players of Evil Dead: The Game. It is based on the Predator franchise and features several characters from the movies as playable characters.
Four players play as members of a special operations team called Fireteam Voodoo, and their job is to complete certain objectives while making their way through the jungle terrain and fighting off NPCs. The catch is that a fifth player controls the predator, whose sole purpose is to take down the fireteam using a wide array of advanced weapons and tools before they get a chance to complete their mission.
4 Aliens: Fireteam Elite
Aliens: Fireteam Elite is a multiplayer third-person shooter that launched in 2021 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. Developed by Cold Iron Studios, it serves as a sequel to the original Alien trilogy, drawing heavy inspiration from the second movie, Aliens.
The game has up to three players choosing from six colonial marine classes: gunner, demolisher, technician, doc, phalanx, and recon. And over the course of its four-story campaigns and 12 missions, they must fight off an infestation of xenomorphs onboard their ship, the UAS Endeavor.
3 Friday The 13th: The Game
Before they'd worked on Predator: Hunting Grounds, the developers at IllFonic had taken a stab at another well-known movie franchise. Friday The 13th: The Game launched on PC, PS4, and Xbox One in 2017, with a Nintendo Switch launch following in 2019.
The asymmetrical multiplayer game has up to seven players in a match, as they are being stalked across Camp Crystal Lake by another player controlling Jason Voorhees. Their goal is to escape before they get killed, either by completing specific side objectives or successfully evading Jason (who is able to teleport and see through walls) until the match ends.
2 Dead By Daylight
Developed and published by Behavoiur Interactive, Dead By Daylight is yet another asymmetric multiplayer game that fans of Evil Dead: The Game should resonate with. In fact, the Evil Dead franchise is one of several horror film properties that players can choose characters from, with others including Halloween, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Scream.
The game itself has four players trying to survive an onslaught by a fifth player with supernatural abilities from one of the aforementioned horror properties. In order to escape, they must restore power to five generators and leave through one of two exit gates.
1 Left 4 Dead 2
For many players, the definitive asymmetrical multiplayer experience belongs to none other than Left 4 Dead 2. Launched for PC and Xbox 360 in 2009, the game was considered an overall refinement of the first game which came out just one year prior.
Some of the areas that were improved include the visuals, character animations, and an overhauled AI Director. Despite debuting more than a decade ago, the game still remains relevant in certain cooperative multiplayer first-person shooter circles. It had effectively helped create the template that is still being replicated in newer titles like Back 4 Blood.
