Ashley is a divisive character among Resident Evil 4 players. As Leon, you're tasked with keeping her safe, and understandably, un-kidnapped. However, while it's fair enough to assume that the job entails killing a few baddies, it also means catching Ashley whenever there's a ladder in her way, because she absolutely refuses to use any of them.
Thankfully, that's all changing in the remake. In the latest gameplay footage revealed by Game Informer, we can see Ashley conquering her 18-year-long fear of heights, finally able to use a ladder herself. This gives players more time to focus on the actual mission of keeping her safe, as she's now largely able to handle platforms herself.
This phenomenal piece of character growth can be spotted in the latest gameplay reveal, at around the 0:50 mark. After being given a boost, Ashley climbs the ladder, and even lowers it so Leon can join her.
Later on, she manages to climb down a ladder herself, proving that she's mastered both of these tasks, all on her own. But of course, Leon being Leon, he'll still jump down for no apparent reason, and at great risk to himself. He's still a show-off.
This will likely come as a relief to fans, as we won't have to stop the action to make sure Ashley is on the same level as us all the time, giving her a bit more independence. Of course, you still have to keep an eye on her, especially when enemies are alerted to your presence.
Not all aspects of the preview are being met with praise, however. As we reported earlier in the week, many are disappointed with the remake's rain, of all things. In fact, some fans think it looks so rough that they're comparing it to the notoriously awful rain visuals in GTA Definitive Edition. Although looking at the above footage, I think it's fair to say that it isn't quite that bad. It also isn't so overpowering that it makes the game harder to play, which is a nice bonus.
