Blizzard VP Says Henry Cavill Would Make A "Dreamy" Arthas In A Warcraft Movie

Henry Cavill is a hot commodity these days. He’s currently playing Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher; he’s expected to reprise his role as Superman in the DC Extended Universe for three more films; and his even being considered as the next James Bond.

Now former Blizzard senior vice president Chris Metzen thinks the 37-year-old English actor would be perfect as Arthas Menethil, the Lich King and leader of The Scourge in a film adaptation of Warcraft. “That Henry would be a good Arthas or that he’s dreamy? Clearly both… d’uh,” Metzen tweeted in a reply to a fan.

Cavill’s name was thrown into the ring in September when graphic designer Mustafa Kemal Sezeroğlu posted a fan film poster for a hypothetical Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King film, with Henry Cavill as the protagonist.

Shortly after the rumor mill started, Netflix released new stills of Cavill in Season 2 of The Witcher, which further fueled speculation on Twitter that the actor would be a great choice to play Arthas, something the folks at Blizzard, including writer Christine Golden, associate narrative designer Anne Stickney, and Metzen, seemed to wholeheartedly agree with.

Following the online support for Cavill as Arthas, another fan poster popped up courtesy of Redditor Shara184, which led to growing support among gamers for the actor in the role. The only problem is that there are currently no plans to make an Arthas: Rise of the Lich King film.

The Warcraft novel by Christie Golden, which was released on April 21, 2009, was a commercial success, but the 2016 Warcraft film received mixed reviews. In addition, despite earning $439 million at the box office, it reportedly lost Universal between $15-40 million.

Still, there is hope. Last month, insider Daniel Richtman revealed on his Patreon that another Warcraft film was in development at Legendary. So far, nothing has been confirmed and Cavill’s name has not been mentioned, therefore, it remains to be seen if the actor will make the leap from superhero to monster slayer to spy to paladin.
