Cyberpunk 2077 Politics

In one of the biggest upsets of 2019, and in that same VGC interview (they’re doing good work over there) Mike Pondsmith talked a bit about the message he wants Cyberpunk to have. “I tell people that Cyberpunk is a warning, not, ‘hey, this is going to be great.’ “

He goes on to say: “So if we have that, what are we going to do with it? How are we going to make the world work? How are we going to make sure that the right people use that technology responsibly? Do we really want corporations structuring how our lives work? Right now we have corporations that follow us everywhere. It’s important for us to think where we’re going with this capability.”

He then lays the smackdown (I saw the new Jumanji trailer recently) on the whole politics in gaming thing by saying “Oh yeah. Somebody asked me a while back if Cyberpunk was political and I said inherently it’s always political. It’s not politics in terms of right or left, or even conservative versus liberal… everything is political. Human beings are political.”

It’s a nice change of pace to see a creator being so honest about their work. It actually makes me a little more hopeful about the game itself too, dystopian futures should clearly be bad, there should be no stigma in saying so, yet so many are afraid to tell it like it is. We will get to see more before the game releases no doubt, but it’s shaping up in an interesting way.
