Does Anyone Else Remember Chris Pratt Playing Obi Wan Kenobi In The Kinect Star Wars Trailer?

All actors have to start somewhere, but only a few get the opportunity to include “Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Kinect Star Wars trailer” on their resume. Aired back in 2012, it’s likely that you either missed or didn’t recognize Chris Pratt in the promotional video for Microsoft’s galactic collaboration, where we see him fight in outer space years before his career as Star Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy.

He’s not just playing the role of Jedi #34, but one of the most powerful and famous across the stars. And he embodies that energy well, although with less of the grace and temperance from the original character.

Chris Pratt acts like any young adult would do in a situation like this. In the official trailer for Kinect Star Wars, we witness the rather young version of the known actor swinging around a fictional lightsaber against Darth Vader. He does the sort of buffoonery you would expect from Star Lord, but since the actual character he interprets here is so different, the dissonance is immense.

“Can’t win Darth,” Pratt tells with a playful smile on his face. “Strike me now and I’ll become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.” Vader seems to respect his rival despite the constant mockery, and at no point decides to strangle him using the force and call it a day.

Instead he tries, and fails, to give his monologue before the final strike. But it seems like that’s not enough to get rid of Obi Pratt Kenobi, who just reappears semi-naked for a quick second in a hero pose, right before the logo of Star Wars takes over the screen. It’s the kind of marketing one could expect from early 2000s, but this is all more funny considering that the actor actually became the leading face of a huge character not long after when Guardians of the Galaxy appeared in 2014.

Despite his best acting efforts, Kinect Star Wars didn’t receive the best reception, sitting on a 55 Metascore with 3.8 User Score over at Metacritic. As for the gadget itself, it has been somewhat kept alive in recent time, for some reason. Kinects were being used as surveillance cameras in Newark Airport back in 2019, and there’s an upcoming simulator called Space Warlord Organ Trading which will support Xbox’s peripheral.

As for Pratt himself, we know he has moved on to better things already. But it’s worth remembering the time when he was also the guardian of a galaxy far, far away.
