Electronic Arts has postponed EA Play Live by seven days, in light of the worldwide protests against racial injustice and police brutality following the killing of George Floyd.
“With the important conversations taking place and important voices being heard around the world right now, we’re moving our time to come together in play,” EA announced Friday in a statement posted on Twitter. The company said that it now plans to present a livestreamed E3-esque showcase at 7 p.m. EDT on June 18, exactly one week after its originally scheduled time.
Earlier this week, EA CEO Andrew Wilson announced that the company is taking a series of actions to support the fight against racial injustice. They include making a $1 million donation to organizations such as the Equal Justice Initiative and the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund.
EA has not given any indication of what it will show at EA Play Live, saying only that viewers should expect “world premieres, news and more!” The publisher previously pushed back its Madden NFL 21 reveal as a show of respect for the aforementioned Black Lives Matter protests; EA had planned to unveil the game on Monday, June 1. The only other announced titles in EA’s 2020 slate are FIFA 21, NHL 21, and the virtual reality game Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond.
For years now, EA has run EA Play as its own E3-adjacent press briefing that’s unaffiliated with the actual convention. This year, the company announced it would turn the show into a digital event due to the coronavirus pandemic. The cancellation of E3 2020 as an in-person convention has left a vacuum in the gaming event schedule, and publishers of all sizes have filled it with plans for livestreams of their own.
