Metro.co.uk has been granted an early first look at Sir Trevor McDonald in his new role as the titular GamesMaster, in E4’s reboot of the classic show.
From the moment he was announced, former newsreader Sir Trevor McDonald seemed like the perfect choice to take over from the late Sir Patrick Moore as the GamesMaster – the iconic figurehead (literally) of the classic 90s video game show.
Sir Trev will be flanked by three new presenters, replacing original ringmaster Dominik Diamond, in the form of Consolevania and VideoGaiden veteran Robert ‘Rab’ Florence, esports presenter Frankie Ward, and content creator Ty Logan.
As in the old show, the focus will be on celebrities, as well as ‘gaming stars and super fans’ taking part in various video game related challenges, in an attempt to win the iconic Golden Joystick trophy.
Although the new GamesMaster was announced a while back, up till now it’s been unclear what role he would play in the show, as originally Sir Patrick used to give out tips and hints to viewers – which isn’t really necessary nowadays.
It turns out the GamesMaster’s role will now be to set up the challenges for the contenders and explain the games to them and the audience. It looks like he’ll also be adding some sassy commentary as they compete too.
The games involved include Street Fighter 5, Mario Kart 8, Tekken 7, and Beat Saber – the latter continuing the show’s time honoured tradition of making contestants look silly while they play.
The new show will take the form of three 60 minute episodes, which don’t have an air date yet but are due before the end of the year. They’ll go live on E4’s YouTube channel first though, before hitting live broadcast TV.
