Final Fantasy 16 May Be Rated M For Mature Ages

The next highly anticipated entry in the Final Fantasy franchise, Final Fantasy 16, may see itself with an M rating come its release. The game, which opened Sony’s most recent PS5 showcase, had been rumored to appear and its first look received a slew of positive feedback.

Final Fantasy 16 will be heading back to its roots, taking place in a medieval setting with more of a focus on fantastical elements than its predecessor, Final Fantasy 15. The trailer showed off plenty of familiar figures and themes Final Fantasy fans are aware of, along with a look at the combat and story to come. Something that also caught fans’ attention was the dark tone of the trailer.

Throughout the runtime there were glimpses of war and very gruesome deaths, with one character being crushed by a boulder, another with an axe thrown to the face, and a child sprayed with blood of someone murdered right in front of him. All are shocking instances and could play into a more mature rating Final Fantasy has yet to see.

According to a recent statement from Square Enix, Final Fantasy 16 has a provisional rating of Pegi 18 which would translate to an M rating. This is subject to change but as of now, the newest addition to the universe will see its highest rating so far for a main line title. Fans expressed their excitement over the rating across social media, hoping the franchise will explore more mature topics within this iteration.

Because the game already has a provisional rating, this could be another hint to Final Fantasy 16 not being as far off as first expected. The trailer showed off ample amounts of both cinematics and combat from the game, which has supposedly been in development for at least four years already. This, along with the provisional rating, could very well mean  that Final Fantasy 16 is already playable in some capacity and could be hitting store shelves sooner than expected.

There is no word yet on an official release date for Final Fantasy 16 but the title will be a PS5 console exclusive while also releasing on PC.
