Final Fantasy 7 Remake launch plans have been confirmed by Sony and Square Enix in the latest State of Play stream.
Sony closed its recent Nintendo Direct-style State of Play broadcast with a surprise look at the Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
Featuring a combination of cinematic and gameplay footage, the State of Play trailer was the first new FF7 Remake video since 2016.
And by showing it during the May 9 State of Play broadcast, Sony and Square Enix have put an old rumour to rest.
With rumours of development problems compounded by a lack of new gameplay footage, there was speculation that the game would skip the PS4 and launch solely on the PlayStation 5.
However, with this week’s State of Play focusing exclusively on “upcoming PS4 games”, it looks like Square Enix is planning a PS4 launch, after all.
Indeed, a PS4 launch was confirmed in a follow-up post on the PlayStation Blog.
“The main staff from the original game have reunited for this PS4 remake, with more details coming in June,” the post begins.
Producer Yoshinori Kitase continues: “Finally… the long awaited moment has come. Sorry to keep you all waiting so long!
“We hope you enjoyed the footage shown during State of Play. It was quite short, but hopefully you enjoyed seeing Cloud and Aerith brought back to life with such realistic graphics.
“And oh my god! Did you notice he was there too…?”
With the PS5 rumoured to launch in 2020, it can also be assumed that the Final Fantasy 7 Remake will release sooner than anticipated.
Indeed, the trailer – which can be seen at the top of the page – states that the “return draws closer”.
Square Enix is expected to announce the release date during its E3 presentation next month.
The Square Enix E3 stream will go live at 2am UK time on Tuesday, June 11. US viewers can tune in at 6pm PDT on June 10.
The release date could also be revealed during the inevitable Sony E3 State of Play broadcast during the same week.
