Former Rainbow Six Siege creators are making a new game for Amazon

Despite its past setbacks, Amazon is still trying to break into gaming. The company is opening up a new game development studio in Montreal, led by some of the creative talent behind Rainbow Six Siege, it announced on Tuesday.

The new studio will include head of production Luc Bouchard, creative director Xavier Marquis, head of product Alexandre Remy, and content director Romain Rimokh, who all worked previously on Ubisoft’s tactical shooter, Rainbow Six Siege. Unsurprisingly, with a team that’s heavy on multiplayer experience, the new Amazon studio’s first game will be an “online multiplayer title based on new IP.”

“Building upon 8 years of experience with Siege, we are excited to start with a blank page and the creative freedom to create a completely unique experience in the multiplayer space,” said Marquis in the company’s press release. “From our first discussion, we felt a true connection with the people at Amazon Games, their approach to gaming and the sheer amount of knowledge, expertise and technology available there. It is quite humbling and we couldn’t be more excited to start a studio with them.”

While Amazon has spent the last several years trying to push its way into game development, it’s had a rough go so far. The company’s biggest upcoming game is the colonization MMO, New World, which has been delayed a number of times, finally seems close to release in 2021. Meanwhile, its other high profile project, Crucible, never found an audience after its release and was eventually canceled. Amazon also has other projects in the works that it hasn’t yet announced, including a game from Smilegate RPG.
