Last weekend, we got to see nine whole minutes of Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139 gameplay (henceforth to be shortened to just Nier Replicant). The trailer showcased scenes from The Barren Temple, a desert locale from the original game populated by strange people wearing pyramid-shaped hats.
It also showed off Nier Replicant’s eclectic mix of open-world exploration, 2D platforming, and hack-and-slash action.
And one other thing that Nier fans were able to pick out was the changes between the original and the remake, especially in terms of voice lines.
During the boss fight against the weird block monster, Kaine originally said, “How’d you bastards get here?” Followed by “Stay there! I’ll take care of this loser!”
Now in the remake, Kaine addresses the monster saying, “There you are, you bastard!” Then instead of being interrupted by a shout of “Kaine” from Weiss, it’s Gestalt who shouts her name as she appears in the temple window.
And then, just before leaping onto the monster to deliver the killing blow, Kaine yells, “I’m gonna kill the S— out of you! Now hold still and DIE ALREADY!”
This is likely a reference to Nier: Automata’s 2B, who shouts a similar line as she delivers the killing blow against the Goliath boss.
The trailer also confirms that Laura Bailey and Liam O’Brien will reprise their roles as Kaine and Grimoire Weiss in the remake. From the sound of it, Zach Aguilar will play the role of young Gestalt. The full English voice cast has yet to be officially announced.
According to series producer Yosuke Saito and director Yoko Taro, if Nier Replicant sells half as many copies as Nier: Automata (which hit 5 million units last December), then they’ll add old-man Gestalt as a playable character. It’s a bit of a stretch goal, but there are a lot of Nier fans out there after Automata, so maybe it’s not so out of reach.
Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139 hits PC, Xbox One, and PS4 on April 23.
