Kojima Clarifies That His Studio Isn’t Being Acquired By Sony

Hideo Kojima's company, Kojima Productions, has been surrounded by rumours for the past few months. One minute, the team is going Xbox exclusive. Now, they're the latest PlayStation acquisition. With fans jumping on even the slightest of "clues" as an apparent tease of a big announcement, Kojima has finally intervened, confirming that neither of the theories is true.

Following speculation that Kojima Productions was about to be acquired by Sony, Kojima has confirmed that it will "continue to be an independent studio". This comes after Kojima suspiciously shared a PlayStation promotional image that featured Death Stranding among other PS exclusives, leading many to believe that Sony would continue its spending spree with the much-loved developer.

"I'm sorry for the misunderstanding", Kojima writes on his Twitter account. "But KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS has been and will continue to be an independent studio." In other words, it looks like Kojima just thought the graphic featuring Death Stranding and other PlayStation games looked cool.

Admittedly, it is easy to see why fans jumped to this conclusion. The image Kojima shared features Death Stranding above the logo for PlayStation studios. However, given his clarification that the company will remain independent, it's likely that this is just referring to its one-time PlayStation exclusivity.

Mind you, that exclusivity has been over for some time. As of March 30, 2022, Death Stranding Director's Cut has been available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Anyone who owns the original release – which came to PC in July 2020 – can nab the upgrade for $10 USD.

Even if PlayStation hasn't managed to buy Kojima Productions, more high profile acquisitions can be expected. Jim Ryan has already confirmed that more are planned, even after the company already forked over a reported $3.6 billion to pick up Bungie.
