Minecraft: Every Breedable Mob, Ranked

Minecraft has seen some major changes recently with the release of the Caves and Cliffs update. This update has added plenty of new features to the game, including revamped caves, improved mountains and, of course, some new mobs. There are already dozens of different animals in Minecraft with the Caves and Cliffs update introducing us to three more animals: axolotls, goats, and glow squid.

The list of breedable mobs in Minecraft just keeps getting bigger and bigger. If you’re struggling to figure out which ones you should include in your animal farm, it turns out that some mobs have more uses than others. Here are all of the breedable mobs in Minecraft, ranked from least to most useful.

17 Axolotl

Lush CavesXPBucket of tropical fish

Axolotls may be interesting animals in Minecraft, but other than being a cool addition to an aquarium, they don't have much use. If you're doing some underwater exploration, axolotls will attack hostile mobs and do little to no damage.

Considering they don’t drop anything other than experience orbs, it’s safe to say you don’t need to farm axolotls in your lush cave.

16 Hoglin

BiomeDropsBred with
Nether – Crimson Forest, Bastion RemnantXP, Leather, Raw porkchopCrimson fungi

Only spawning in the Nether, the hoglin is the one of just two hostile mobs that can be bred, along with the killer bunny. They’re a decent source of XP considering each hoglin will drop five experience orbs, but they’re more trouble than they’re worth.

You could get all of a hoglin’s drops from a cow and a pig, so there’s not much of a reason to go all the way to the Nether for these mobs.

15 Strider

BiomeDropsBred with
Nether – Lava Sea, Delta, Nether Wastes, Crimson Forest, Warped Forest, Soul Sand Valley, Basalt DeltasXP, StringWarped fungus

Striders can only be found in the Nether and are surprisingly useful because they can walk on lava. Just strap a saddle to the back of one of these bad boys, craft warped fungus on a stick and you could stride through lava.

Thankfully, striders are passive mobs, so they won’t attack you like other mobs in the Nether. Striders mind their own business.

14 Fox

Taiga, GroveXP, Emerald (1%), Rabbit's Foot (2%), Rabbit Hide (2%), Egg (3%), Wheat (4%), Leather (4%), Feather (4%)Sweet berries, Glow berries

Foxes are unique in that they can sometimes be found holding an item in their mouth. It could be anything from a rare emerald to a piece of leather.

The chances of a fox actually holding an item are quite low and they love to roam around, making them a bad choice for those looking to start an emerald farm.

13 Cat & Ocelot

Cats and ocelots are great companions. Their presence can spruce up a village and they’re also a good source of string, but that’s about it.

Neither of these animals will defend you if you’re under attack. If anything, they like to get in the way by lying on top of your bed and chests. They're a bit of a pain.

12 Panda

BiomeDropsBred with
Jungle, Bamboo JungleXP, BambooBamboo

Pandas are found in bamboo jungles. They drop bamboo and eat bamboo. It’s safe to say you’ll never have to worry about bamboo if you have a panda farm. To mate, there must be at least eight bamboo blocks within a five-block radius of both pandas. Once that condition is met, feeding them bamboo will make them breed.

Fun fact, baby pandas have a chance to drop a slimeball when they sneeze. It’s cute, but also kind of gross.

11 Turtle

BiomeDropsBred with
BeachXP, SeagrassSeagrass

Turtles serve little purpose in Minecraft because they’re all about seagrass. When they breed, the pregnant turtle gets bigger and eventually digs a spot for her eggs. You can’t do anything with these turtle eggs and it’s easier to farm seagrass by swimming down to the ocean floor.

If killed by lightning, the turtle will turn into a bowl, which is both sad and hilarious at the same time.

10 Rabbit

The rabbits in Minecraft are so cute, which is one of the reasons why they’re a common pet in the game. Their rabbit hide is useful for creating bundles and their rabbit’s foot is necessary to brew some potions.

Sadly, rabbit meat is one of the worst foods in the game, restoring only five hunger points per cooked rabbit.

9 Llama & Trader Llama

Windswept Hills, Windswept Forest, SavannaXP, LeatherRepeated mountingHay Bales

Llamas are a bit confusing. They must be mounted multiple times to be tamed, but you can’t actually put a saddle on them and ride them. This means that, while you can equip a llama with a chest, you’ll have to use a lead to keep it near you.

Having an animal on a lead can get annoying really quickly because it limits your mobility.

8 Goat

BiomeDropsBred with
MountainsXP, Goat Horns, MilkWheat

Goats are a fairly useful addition to the Minecraft animal family, so there are a lot of things you need to know about these critters. In the Bedrock Edition, goats can drop goat horns if they smack into a solid block.

Using goat horns makes the same horn sound that can be heard when a raid starts. Goats can also be milked, just like cows so they have a fair amount of uses.

7 Wolf

While wolves might not drop anything useful, they are the best companions in the game because they actually help you out. They will attack hostile mobs and other players that attack you.

They are also very easy to breed since they’ll take any kind of meat. Wolves listen to commands as well, so you could keep them at home if need be.

6 Bee

Meadow, Plains, ForestXPFlowers

The bees in Minecraft are absolutely massive and won’t attack unless provoked. As long as you leave their beehives alone (unless they have a campfire underneath) and keep some flowers around, you’ll be fine.

Bees are a good source of honey, which has plenty of uses. Honey can be used to make sugar, a decorative honeycomb block for your house and much more.

5 Pig

BiomeDropsBred with
Most Overworld biomesXP, Raw porkchopCarrot, Potato, Beetroot

One of the most essential things for Minecraft players to build is a farm and no farm is complete without pigs. Pigs are the best source of food in Minecraft since they can be found almost everywhere and a single cooked porkchop recovers eight hunger points.

On top of that, you can ride a pig with a saddle and a carrot on a stick. Pigs give you this weird look when you put the saddle on, but they’re fine with it.

4 Chicken

BiomeDropsBred with
Most Overworld biomesXP, Feathers, Raw chickenSeeds

Chickens are a popular farm animal for a reason. They’re very easy to breed as they just require seeds and even lay eggs on their own every five to ten minutes. Throwing their eggs has a chance of spawning a baby chicken.

While cooked chicken is not a top tier food option in Minecraft, the feathers chickens drop are useful for creating arrows.

3 Sheep

BiomeDropsBred with
Most Overworld biomesXP, Wool, Raw muttonWheat

Sheep are versatile animals. If you need meat, cooked mutton restores six hunger points, making it just as effective as cooked chicken. Sheep can also be sheared to drop more wool and will regrow their coat by eating the grass of a grass block.

The wool of a sheep is used mainly for decorative purposes. It can be used to make beds, carpets and paintings.

2 Horse, Mule & Donkey

Horses, mules and donkeys are grouped together because they’re all very similar. Horses are your best way to travel on land due to their fast movement speed. Mules and Donkeys are useful if you’re lugging a lot around as they can also be equipped with chests.

Mules are bred from a horse and a donkey. Just like in real life, they cannot mate with other mules.

1 Cow & Mooshroom

BiomeDropsBred with
Most Overworld biomesXP, Leather, Raw beef, Milk, MushroomsWheat

Cows are the workhorse animal in Minecraft. Not only do they drop XP, leather and raw beef, but they can even be milked. You can drink a bucket of milk to remove any status effects and it’s also one of the ingredients to make a cake.

Mooshrooms can be sheared to obtain five mushrooms that could be used to make stew. Just know that mooshrooms turn into regular cows after being sheared.
