Mortal Kombat fans aren't sure whether NetherRealm Studios has just teased Mortal Kombat 12, or if it's another elaborate prank from the studio.
Aside from its work on Injustice and Mortal Kombat, if there's one thing that NetherRealm Studios is known for, it's trolling its audience. Studio head Ed Boon is perhaps the most infamous for this, constantly making references to games and characters that fans want through Twitter posts. If you ever wanted Mileena or Rain in recent Mortal Kombat games, you'll know the pain of an Ed Boon tease.
This teasing has resurfaced thanks to a recent Tweet from Jonathan Andersen, senior production manager at NetherRealm. Andersen Tweeted an image of several bits of concept art, including Injustice and some classic Mortal Kombat games. The image also shows his computer screen and when zoomed in enough, you can see the words "MK12_Mast", hinting at a new Mortal Kombat.
You can also see an email from someone named Christine, warning the recipients to take extra care with the materials as fans tend to "eagerly scrape the internet" for clues. The Tweet has since been deleted, but screenshots of it have been shared around several Mortal Kombat communities.
This has split the community, with some believing that the combination of the email saying to be careful of sharing stuff and the fact you can see the files right there is an obvious sign that Andersen shared it on purpose and is just messing with the community. One Redditor pointed out that another of the files that can be seen on the computer looks like it says Reptile, which is a clear jab at the character not being included in Mortal Kombat 11.
Others believe it to be a genuine mistake on the part of Andersen and not a purposeful tease. Whether the "leak" was done on purpose or accidentally, NetherRealm's teasing nature means that it doesn't necessarily confirm that the studio's next game is Mortal Kombat 12. For now, it's best to assume it's yet another misdirect.
