New footage of Evo’s famous Street Fighter 3 moment discovered

We’re getting a new look at the most infamous moment in fighting game history, after new footage showing “Moment 37” — a fight between legendary players Daigo Umehara and Justin Wong at Evo 2004 — was uploaded on Wednesday.

Evo Moment 37 is famous for its display of technical prowess. In it, Umehara and Wong were battling in Street Fighter 3: Third Strike. Umehara baits Wong into unleashing Chun-li’s EX move, Hyakuretsukyaku, hoping that it will chip away at the remaining sliver of Ken’s health.

No such luck, of course. Umehara parries every hit, having memorized the timing of Chun-Li’s kicks perfectly, and responds with a devastating combo of his own. The moment has been viewed millions of times and has its own dedicated Wikipedia entry.

On Wednesday, new footage of that moment from the Evo 2004 tournament was uploaded to YouTube, offering an alternate angle of the full match. It was posted by Mark “MarkMan” Julio, Evo business developer and Tekken brand and community advisor, who says he found the fresh footage amid “a stack of old tapes and discs that we filmed from past fighting game events (early 2000s).”

Here’s Julio’s description of the footage, which he credits to Ace R., from YouTube:

Just unearthed this footage from Evo 2004. The SDTEKKEN group competed at this event and captured a lot of action from the Tekken 5 open location test. We also recorded some of the tournament action, including this short and legendary match. It was an alternate angle from the now famous Evo Moment 37 video.

While it doesn’t show much new, it does provide some fresh crowd reaction noise — including a prescient “Don’t do it” and some pretty salty language. But it’s a clean, clear look at one of fighting games’ best displays of talent.
