Nordisk Games Acquires The Quarry Developer Supermassive

Nordisk Games has acquired British developer Supermassive Games, creators of Until Dawn, The Quarry, and The Dark Pictures Anthology. Nordisk has owned a 30 percent stake in the studio since 2021 but decided to increase its investment.

Nordisk Games, which is owned by entertainment company Nordisk Film, continues to make equity investments in European game studios. Today's deal marks the third wholly-purchased studio in its portfolio, following Danish Flashbulb Games and Swedish Avalanche Studios Group purchases. All in all, its current list of minority and majority-owned studios also includes Star Stable Entertainment, Nitro Games, and MercurySteam.

Supermassive and Nordisk revealed they "share a lot of important values" and believe "these values to be equally important to [the already] existing commercial partners," which led to this natural outcome. As part of the deal, Supermassive will continue working on narrative-driven games like Until Dawn.

"Having had such a positive experience over the past year it wasn't a difficult decision when Nordisk Games wanted to explore increasing their investment. We have an exciting and ambitious growth strategy for [this] ownership only enhances that," Supermassive Games CEO Pete Samuels said.

According to Nordisk CEO Mikkel Weider, in the past year it became clear how much talent there is in the Supermassive team and their potential to further develop the genre the studio already excels at. "In acquiring 100% of the studio we'll be able to increase our support to the team, and most importantly, continue the great working relationship we have with them," he said.

Supermassive's latest game is The Quarry, which was reportedly intended to be a first-party Google Stadia title before the developers found another publisher. The game launched this June, but its long-awaited online multiplayer mode called the "Wolf Pack" arrived mere days ago.

Besides The Quarry, the studio is also putting the finishing touches on the next Dark Pictures Anthology chapter called The Devil In Me. Starring Oscar nominee Jessie Buckley, this episode is due to arrive later this year.
