Overwatch is famous for its vast array of characters that come in all shapes and sizes and let players engage with myriad different playstyles.
The biggest chat around Overwatch is usually (if there’s not an event on) what the next character will be, and when they’ll come to the game.
For a while now, we’ve had the knowledge that Hero 31 is on the way, and a new update from Jeff Kaplan this week has revealed that we may see them sooner (rather than later).
As per a new developer update from game director Jeff Kaplan, Overwatch’s Summer Games 2019 will take place a little earlier than usual, then following the conclusion of the event, we’ll get our first look at Hero 31.
So far, Kaplan hasn’t revealed the exact release date for the now-classic annual event, but at least now we know we’re definitely going to get it before early August (its traditional starting time).
Then, Kaplan goes on to tease the next character: “He is going to be awesome”. They just need ‘a bit’ more time to make him more awesome.
Sounds innocuous enough, but that little emphasis Kaplan puts on ‘he’ makes a lot of difference.
That narrows it down somewhat, then. Theories have been circulating lately about a female Hero 31, but Kaplan puts a pin in that here.
So who could Hero 31 be, then?
Well, the statement suggests that popular fan theories positioning Hero 31 as Mauga (who we’ve seen in the Baptiste short story “What You Left Behind”) may be the most likely option.
The first choice, a new Talon character named Mauga, is “a giant, broad-shouldered man covered in tattoos” – lovely – and is an ex-ally of Baptiste. The fact that we know he wields two massive chainguns, has an energy shield and heavy armour means Blizzard has clearly been putting some thought into his design. We wonder why…
It looks like people are going to have to wait a while for that blue-faced Omnic, Echo.
In a recent interview with Geman Overwatch YouTube channel HighscoreHeroes, we got to hear a bit more information about a hero named Echo.
It was confirmed back then that we’d be waiting a little while to see the character – and now we know why!
On the channel Joshua Noh, a developer on the multi-player giant that is Overwatch, said:
“We’re definitely going to make her a hero at some point. I don’t think she’s the next hero, if that tells you anything”.
A Wiki entry on the character states:
“Long after the disbandment of Overwatch, Echo was being transported in a crate on a military freight train. The train was derailed by the Deadlock Gang, but they were incapacitated by McCree.
“He then proceeded to reactivate her. She was unaware of how much time had passed, and was taken aback to see that McCree’s left arm had been replaced by a cybernetic graft.
“He evaded telling her the details, but informed her of Winston’s recall of Overwatch agents, that while he’d been summoned, she was the one that Overwatch needed. He then departed on a hoverbike, saying that he had some business of his own to attend to.”
It sounds like – no matter who the next character in Overwatch is going to be – we’re going to get a lot more lore soon.
In previous years, we’ve seen the new characters drop in July (Ana launched July 19, Doomfist launched July 27 and Wrecking Ball launched July 24) – does that mean we can expect to see a new character very, very soon?
It looks like the stars are aligning.
