Respawn CEO Vince Zampella To Take Control Of The Battlefield Series

Respawn CEO Vince Zampella is going to be in control of the Battlefield series following the departure of DICE GM Oskar Gabrielson.

As you're probably aware by now, Battlefield 2042 has had a pretty rough launch, with players complaining about pretty much every aspect of the game, ranging from its new Hazard Zone mode to its numerous glitches. The launch has been so rough that Battlefield 2042 is currently one of the worst-rated games on Steam, with fans pushing back against all of their problems with the game.

Despite this rocky launch, EA seems to be planning ahead for Battlefield, as today it announced that Respawn Entertainment CEO Vince Zampella will be taking over control of the franchise, as reported by GameSpot.

GameSpot reports that Zampella will now be overseeing the whole Battlefield franchise and that original Halo designer and former V1 Interactive studio lead Marcus Lehto will be using a new studio in Seattle for "injecting more storytelling into the Battlefield Universe".

Meanwhile, Battlefield 2042's Portal mode developer, Ripple Effect, is also reportedly developing a new experience specifically in the Battlefield 2042 universe. GameSpot stresses that these new games are "meant to serve as extensions, to a degree, of the new Battlefield universe that EA is trying to create", and not as a replacement for Battlefield 2042.

The report also reveals that EA plans to create a "connected Battlefield universe". Zampella spoke to GameSpot about it, saying that it wasn't to replace Battlefield 2042. He said, "This is an 'And' strategy in many ways. We will continue to evolve and grow Battlefield 2042, and we'll explore new kinds of experiences and business models along the way that we can add to that foundation to provide an awesome array of experiences for our players. In this universe, the world is interconnected with shared characters and narrative. This universe is also built with our community as we harness the power of Portal and user-generated content that puts creativity in the hands of our players."
