According to a new Xbox Series X|S report, Microsoft has secured another exclusive title for the next-gen consoles. Microsoft is reportedly working with FromSoftware, the developer of Dark Souls, Sekiro, and Bloodborne, among others, on a sci-fi RPG.
The report comes from Miles Dompier of Windows Central who says he’s heard rumors of a collaboration between FromSoftware and Microsoft. The new game would be a coup for Xbox Series X|S as it seeks to rival PS5 and corner the market on next-gen exclusives.
FromSoftware, a Japanese game developer founded in November 1986 as a subsidiary of Kadokawa Corporation, first released RPG King’s Field as a launch title for PlayStation in 1994. When the PS2 was launched in 2000, the developer delivered a first-person RPG Eternal Ring and a third-person RPG Evergrace for the new console.
These titles were followed by Xbox titles such as 2002’s mech action game Murakumo: Renegade Mech Pursuit and 2004’s Metal Wolf Chaos for the Xbox. The studio achieved global success with the 2009 release of action RPG Demon’s Souls for the PS3. The game, which had sold over one million copies worldwide as of 2011, was remade in 2020 as a launch title for the PS5.
On January 13 2021, the PlayStation Blog reported that the remake of Demon’s Souls was the fifth bestselling PS5 game digitally for 2020 in the United States, Canada, and all of Europe after Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, NBA 2K21 Next Generation (US) and FIFA 21 (Europe).
FromSoftware is currently working on the forthcoming Elden Ring, an action RPG that will be published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The game, a collaboration between Demon’s Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki and A Song of Fire and Ice series writer George R. R. Martin, is set to be released for Microsoft Windows, PS4 and Xbox One. Martin is working on the backstory of the game’s universe, which Miyazaki will use to develop the title’s narrative.
In an interview with IGN, Miyazaki said, “There is no fixed main character in Elden Ring. We mostly leave it up to the player to decide the characteristics and personality of the character they create,” adding that “The gameplay is not so far from Dark Souls. That doesn’t mean that the gameplay will be identical, but you could say that Elden Ring belongs to the same genre.”
