After six years of development, one name change, and a console generation tech overhaul, Praey For The Gods has finally been released. The game received its 1.0 update on Steam on December 14, with the final version of the game adding the last elements of the open world, the final two bosses, and a completed story.
It also came with a console launch on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
Praey For The Gods has been on a long and winding road getting to today. The game first ran into trouble with Bethesda back in 2017 when the publisher objected to the word "Prey" in the original title. Developer No Matter Studios decided to just add an "a" to the name so they didn't have to rework the logo they'd already created. Then the game was released on Steam early access in 2020 with a targeted release date of Q1 2021.
We all know how 2020 went, and 2021 wasn't particularly better. So we didn't hear back from Praey For The Gods until… well, now.
That extra year was well spent. In 2020, we saw how the power of the PS5 would give Praey For The Gods incredible lighting, shadows, fur textures, and more. With the launch trailer, we see Praey’s even more incredible weather effects, snow textures, and particle effects when knee-deep in combat.
While Praey For The Gods got started as a love letter to Shadow of the Colossus, No Matter has added to the classic giant-monster-killing gameplay loop with a survival system that has the player scavenging for food, resources, and weapons in an unforgiving, frozen landscape. Hunger, fatigue, and chilling temperatures all have to be managed in between bouts with monsters before finally taking on the monstrous "Gods" in order to escape a frozen island.
As promised, any purchases on the PS4 will get a free upgrade to the PS5 version if they manage to find a next-gen console underneath their Christmas trees. PC players don't need to worry about that issue, of course. You can also get the game on Xbox One with backward compatibility providing a 60fps boost on Xbox Series X|S.
