Spider-Man will be exclusive to PlayStation in Square Enix’s Avengers

An online retailer has let slip that Spider-Man will be an exclusive character in the PS4 and PS5 versions of Marvel’s Avengers.

Most movie fans know about the peculiar way in which Marvel sold off the film rights to its various characters, with X-Men and Fantastic Four ending up at 20th Century Fox and the rights for Hulk complicated enough that it doesn’t make financial sense to have another standalone movie.

Thanks to Disney buying them, the 20th Century Fox rights are now back where they belong, but Sony still owns Spider-Man and that looks like it will have some major repercussions for Square Enix’s new Avengers game.

Once again, it’s an online retailer that’s spilt the beans, with Base.com stating that you can ‘Play as Spider-Man exclusively on PS4’. Which, in hindsight, is something that Square Enix has already hinted at.

Square Enix has previously said that it has a global marketing deal with PlayStation, which at the time was taken to mean something like advertising the PlayStation version at the end of an advert, instead of Xbox – something which often happens with big name games that partner with either Microsoft or Sony.

They’ve also said there would be ‘surprises for PlayStation players’, which sounds like some kind of exclusive DLC but now takes on a whole new meaning in light of this leak.

Exactly how the movie rights to Spider-Man relate to the games is not entirely clear, as while Sony has had huge success with its exclusive PlayStation 4 Spider-Man game the rights used to belong to Activision for many years.

In the comics, Spider-Man has often cameoed as an Avenger, just as he did in the movies, so it certainly would be disappointing if he wasn’t playable in the Avengers game.

The beta for Marvel’s Avengers started this weekend and we’ll have a full report on Wednesday, when the embargo lifts.

The full game is due for release on 4 September on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 games have already been confirmed though and will have a free upgrade from the current gen version.

The next standalone Spider-Man game will be a spin-off featuring Miles Morales, which will be a launch title for PlayStation 5.
