Star Wars veteran Anthony Daniels has admitted that he would "accept" another actor stepping into his iconic character's gold-plated shoes beyond the release of The Rise of Skywalker. The C-3PO star seemingly laid his parts on the line in a recent interview with Radio Times, as he opened up about the possibility of his role moving forward without him, insisting that the galaxy's beloved protocol droid is "too good of character, too big of a character" to fade into history."Yes, I quite countenance that," Daniels told the outlet, addressing the future of his role within the franchise. "There are people wandering around Disney theme parks, dressed in better suits than mine. They seem to move a lot more easily."
He continued, "I absolutely admit and accept that. And quite right: he is too good of a character, too big of a character, to die with me. And Disney paid a lot of money for him! You know what I mean? They've got to get their money back somehow."
Daniels' attitude towards his character's pivotal part in the Star Wars universe is echoed in the poignant conclusion of his new autobiography 'I am C-3PO: The Inside Story', wherein the actor acknowledges that his signature role may potentially be recast one day."I surely recognize, I will someday leave the stage," he wrote in the book's final pages. "I hope I will do so in the knowledge that I have imbued See-Threepio with enough life that, with the love of the fans, he will go on without me."
C-3PO is one of the only characters to have appeared in all of the episodic titles in the saga, beginning with the original 1977 Star Wars film right the way through to the upcoming release of The Rise of Skywalker, which officially wrapped production at the start of this year.
"Today was 3PO's last on Episode IX," the actor announced on Twitter at the time. "He's sad – so am I. But we're so proud to have worked with such a lovely, talented cast & crew lead by J.J. & Kathy. I'll miss everyone but I'm glad to know that we've been making something exceptional together to share with the waiting world."For more on the final instalment of the Skywalker saga, find out how much Rise of Skywalker is projected to make in its opening weekend, take a look at the most recent poster for Episode IX, and check out all of the Easter eggs and clues we spotted in the final trailer.
