Epic Games has signed up a new PC exclusive for its online store, but there is a silver-lining if you don’t want to buy from them…
There’s good news and bad news here, for those that still resent PC games being made Epic Games Store exclusives. As while A Total War Saga: Troy will be joining their ranks it will be free for everyone on the day of its release.
It’s an unusual tactic, that Epic hasn’t used before, and clearly aimed at defusing any anger that the game won’t be released on Steam until summer 2021.
Instead, A Total War Saga: Troy will launch on 13 August on Epic Games Store and for the first 24 hours will be a free download, before reverting to its normal price – which give the cost of its predecessor will probably be around £30.
‘While we know that some of you won’t like the Epic Games Store exclusivity, we feel like this is a great opportunity for us in a lot of ways,’ said developer Creative Assembly in a new blog.
‘This is an opportunity for Troy specifically, and we have no plans for future games to be Epic exclusives. As developers we truly value our existing fans, but at the same time we want to reach new audiences and have as many people as possible experiencing the thrill of Total War for themselves.
‘Troy seemed like a good game to try this out with, especially as pre-orders aren’t live on Steam yet, so no one’s already put money into a store they’ll have to wait 12 extra months for it to appear on.’
When Epic Games first started signing up exclusives some PC gamers reacted with vitriol and death threats against developers and it’s not clear whether that’s lessened in recent months because people have got used to the practice or simply because there’s been less exclusives lately.
A Total War Saga: Troy is a follow-up to Throne Of Britannia, with the Saga games focusing on a smaller area and section of history than the mainline Total War titles.
However, relatively little is known about the real siege of Troy and the game uses Homer’s Iliad as one of its main references.
But while there will be units inspired by mythical creatures it seems the supernatural elements will be limited to praying to the Olympian gods and receiving relevant buffs and abilities.
