A PSA from someone on Reddit warns against wearing a mechanical watch while using the PS5’s DualSense.
There is a lot to celebrate about PlayStation and Xbox’s new consoles. However, the element that has been championed most is the PS5’s DualSense. The controller is one of the biggest differences between the last generation and the new one. PlayStation wanted to further submerge its players into the gaming experience and has done so using the DualSense’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.
No piece of new hardware is ever without its misgivings, though. Some of DualSense’s owners have reported the adaptive triggers have already started to fail. It has also been pointed out that the controller’s Sony branding is slightly off-center. That won’t stop you from playing your PS5, of course, but once you know it’s there it’s always in the back of your mind.
Redditor Siguchi has highlighted another potential issue with the DualSense. It’s an issue that won’t affect many of you, just those who wear a mechanical watch. Siguchi clocked that the DualSense has a magnetic field. On the surface, this is neither new nor surprising. The DualShock 4 had a small speaker right in the center of it so did the same thing. However, it isn’t only the DualSense’s speaker that contributes to its magnetism.
It’s the grips too. These are still assumptions at the moment, but it’s thought it’s the DualSense’s vibration actuators that generate the field. In theory, that potentially means a mechanical watch being worn on your wrist while using a DualSense could be demagnetized. In practice, even though the field is far stronger than that of the DualShock 4, it seems unlikely that the controller would be able to have that effect on a watch.
Siguchi conducted an experiment where they tested the magnetic levels at a wrist level and discovered them to be normal. Sony is yet to comment on the discovery, and nothing official has been confirmed or denied. For the time being, if you wear a mechanical watch, it might be a good idea to take it off while you game. Definitely don’t keep it near the controller when it isn’t being worn.

Josh has been gaming for as long as he can remember. That love began with a mild childhood addiction to the Sega Genesis, or Mega Drive since he lives in the UK. Back then, Sonic 2 quickly became his favorite game and as you might have guessed from his picture, the franchise has remained close to his heart ever since. Nowadays, he splits his time between his PS4 and his Switch and spends far too much time playing Fortnite.
