A group of independent game developers have come together to create an alternative cyberpunk experience. Citing criticism of Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red, the group created the Be A Better Cyberpunk bundle, a package of 29 different games and experiences that explore “identity, artificial intelligence, class, gender, and transhumanism.”
The Be A Better Cyberpunk bundle costs $60 for the 29 games, music, and zines, which would regularly cost $108 together. A discounted bundle for $10 is available for “economically or otherwise marginalized” people.
Proceeds from the bundle will be split between the developers involved. Included in the bundle are The Queer Cyberpunk’s Guide to Tabletop RPGs, The Flower Court, nullpointer, Visual Out, and plenty more. The collection looks widely varied, with plenty of options for all different sorts of players.
Ahead of Cyberpunk 2077’s Dec. 10 release date, developer CD Projekt Red has been criticized for its approach to “crunch” — which is when game developers experience a weeks- or monthslong period of overtime — as well as for sexualizing a trans model as part of its promotional materials. The developer also came under fire earlier, in 2018, for transphobia on its social media channels.
The goal for the Be A Better Cyberpunk bundle is to support independent, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ creators making games in the genre.
