Wolfenstein: Youngblood launches in July — with a chance for friends to play it free

Wolfenstein: Youngblood, the next chapter of MachineGames’ twisted and violent alternate history, will launch July 26, publisher Bethesda Softworks announced Wednesday. Bethesda also announced that the co-op shooter may be shared and played among friends for free (with a few conditions).

Someone has to buy Wolfenstein: Youngblood’s Deluxe Edition, and then share its “Buddy Pass” with a pal, and the two of them have to be playing the game together at the same time. But the second person will still be able to experience all of the game for free, Bethesda said. The Buddy Pass may also be shared among multiple friends, although only one at a time may play with the owner.

Buddy Pass beneficiaries may, of course, upgrade to the full game if they want to play it on their own time. It’s the latest twist in incentivizing pre-orders and purchases of special editions, but it does align with the game’s cooperative theme, starring B.J. Blazkowicz’s twin daughters, Jessica and Sophia, in a hip, 1980s version of Paris.

The Deluxe Edition ($39.99) comes with some special in-game content (costumes and weapons). All pre-orders (the basic edition is $29.99) will get further cosmetic bonuses in something called the Youngblood Legacy Pack. Bethesda has more details for those interested.

Wolfenstein: Youngblood, announced at E3 2018, follows 2017’s Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus (set in 1961). It is coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One.
