Tennis World Tour 2 won’t be the sports game fans want on PS5 and Xbox Series X

A good tennis game is hard to find and sadly Tennis World Tour 2 on the PS5 and Xbox Series X isn’t a match winner.

This game came out last year on the older consoles, the PS4 and Xbox One, to relatively average reviews.

Little seems to have changed and what you get with the new machines is pretty much the same thing with slightly smoother graphics.

The gameplay itself is frustrating and overly tough.

The computer-controlled rivals will have you running like a wild man all over the court and beat you into submission far too easily.

Tennis World Tour’s training area is basic and poor, leaving you with little understanding early on about how to tackle big name players like Federer and Nadal.

So when you take to the court in an exhibition or career match you’ll be pummelled time and again.

There’s also a puzzling card system that I still don’t fully understand. It’s a bit like buying Fifa cards with in-game currency that you then use while playing to give you a temporary advantage at certain times on skills and abilities.

It’s a nice idea but takes you away from the actual action you’re meant to be enjoying.

The animations can be a little flat at times and when you’re holding down the ‘run’ trigger you character seems to pop from one point to another in a blink, which is off-putting and looks poor.

There’s a good level of detail in the menu system, allowing you to build your own superstar from the ground up and decent career progression across multiple tournaments.

And with 38 real life tennis players like Andy Murray to play as, it feels quite weighty in its detail.

There is also an online mode so players can challenge each other in singles or doubles or even in match-play leagues.

Developer Big Ant Studios claim this is “the most comprehensive tennis experience” but sadly when it comes to gameplay it’s more Queens than Wimbledon.

VERDICT 2.5/5
